351w roller cams

It has come to my attention that the ford 351 was switched from flat tappet cams to roller cams sometime in the late 90's. Can anyone confrim this? If thats the case, I have been using the wrong oil (VR1 40wt).

I know in Ford trucks the change wsa made in late 1993 early 1994. The only way to know for sure would be to take it apart. Look at the casting number on the side of the block, but it's down below the starter right where the oil pan meets the block, so it's not gonna be easy to see. An F4TE casting means the block is roller ready, (has bosses for for the octopus that holds the lifters in place) but it could still be a flat tappet cam.

Ive been told that all PCM 351w's (up to and including the GT40) were flat tappets. I have never confirmed this.

I'm pretty sure there will be no PCM engines with roller cams unless someone puts it in aftermarket. The only 351W engines that came from the Ford factory will roller cams I know of were in the 1994 Mustang Cobra R models, which were very limited production cars.

If you have a roller ready block it would be easier to convert over using factory Ford parts though...
