    81 Ski Restoration (Engine help)

    Hey guys,
I have an 81 Nautique that I just recently purchased as a restoration project and am having some issues with the engine. It seems to have slight rust in the cylinders as it is very hard to turn. With a big charger on the battery I am able to get it to turn just enough to explore the possiblity of it starting. I have put a new starter on it, rebuilt the carb, and put an electronic ignition module in the old points distributor. I checked all the wires and they are conductive. With all of this done, it will still not start. It will hit, but not run. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the electronic ignition module, as it had to be fabricated to fit the distributor. I have a chevy 355 motor that has been built previously that is pretty high performance intended. It is lacking heads though. So my question is should I try to complete a swap with the engines or keep trying to revive the 351W with possibly a new electronic distributor and more ($$$$). I am not concerned with keeping the boat original, so aftermarket headers tapped to intake a water supply is not a problem. I have heard that the tranny needs to be swaped from L.H. rotation to R.H. in the Chevy -> Ford transition. I believe the tranny needs to be rebuilt anyways because it is leaking a little bit of oil in the bottom of the boat (seal). Any help from yall is much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Were to Start! If the engine is complete a rebuild should run around 1600 to 2000. That will be alot easier than a new one. If there is rust in the cylinders QUIT TRYING TO START IT! You are just scoring the cylinder walls. It sounds like it may have been imersed in Salt. if so the Fuel pump and mechanical timing below the points mounting plate may be rusted. you need to check spark at the plugs and fuel at the carberator. If you have both of those then start looking at the coil and advance. I'm confused when you say you have a chevy then a 351W. Which one is it? Also a rebuild on the tranny wil be 1000 max, around 400 for new seals. Leave the rotation alone unless you want to switch the helm and drivers seat to the other side of the booat Good Luck

sorry I didnt clarify. The boat currently has a 351W. I also have a chevy 355 in my garage that I intended to use in a drag car, but that fell through. So now I have a badass engine with no application, so I was wondering the extensiveness of a swap to put in the chevy engine... or if its worth to stick with the Ford and pull it and sink money in it. Again sorry about the clarification.

Im new to this site and I must say its very impressive. Yall are doin great work and appreciate any help I can get. THANKS
