Hey guys,
I have an 81 Nautique that I just recently purchased as a restoration project and am having some issues with the engine. It seems to have slight rust in the cylinders as it is very hard to turn. With a big charger on the battery I am able to get it to turn just enough to explore the possiblity of it starting. I have put a new starter on it, rebuilt the carb, and put an electronic ignition module in the old points distributor. I checked all the wires and they are conductive. With all of this done, it will still not start. It will hit, but not run. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the electronic ignition module, as it had to be fabricated to fit the distributor. I have a chevy 355 motor that has been built previously that is pretty high performance intended. It is lacking heads though. So my question is should I try to complete a swap with the engines or keep trying to revive the 351W with possibly a new electronic distributor and more ($$$$). I am not concerned with keeping the boat original, so aftermarket headers tapped to intake a water supply is not a problem. I have heard that the tranny needs to be swaped from L.H. rotation to R.H. in the Chevy -> Ford transition. I believe the tranny needs to be rebuilt anyways because it is leaking a little bit of oil in the bottom of the boat (seal). Any help from yall is much appreciated. Thanks for your time.
