    Impeller Problem

    I've read a few posts on Impellers but couldn't find my exact answer.

    My impeller is shot, There are rubber chunks in my cooling system now because the thing basically crumbled to pieces.

    HOW BAD IS THIS? can I get the chunks out of the system?

    My temp got up to 200-210 and I had to limp back to the dock for about 10 minutes. Did I do damage?

    My New Impeller is on order and I now I can install it but my only concern on the GT40 is the Belt Tension when I reinstall the pump. This is in a 1998 Super Sport Nautique with a GT40 PCM 351.

    How do I know how tight to make the belt?

    The only way to tell is to install the new impeller and try it. Use a fake a lake. start the engine watch the temp guage If there is white smoke or you see water leaking out igf the engine turn it off immediately. The first things to fry would be the head gaskets and intake manifold. If you didn't get much above 210 you should be OK.

      FYI 312 F is about where Aluminum will start to warp if you have an aluminum intake manifold.
      For belt tension, here's what the service manual reads:
      1. Check belt tension by depressing upper strand of belt at a point midway between the alternator pulley and the circulating water pump pulley.
      2. Belt should depress 1/4". If depression is more than 1/4", adjust tension by loosening alternator mounting screws and pivoting alternator, as required, to obtain correct tension.
      3. After correct tension has been set, tighten mounting screws.

        You need to flush out your cooling system. Alot of times, the chunks will run toward the lake side of the hose. Check the impeller housing itself to make sure that it didn't get clogged up there. Next you can take a garden hose and flush the line from the trans cooler to the bottom of the impeller pump. You should get a majority of the chunks out from there. The only other real common place to find them is inside of the thermostat housing.
        Check your engine oil and periodically check it after you replace the impeller to make sure that it is not making oil. If it is, you probably blew a head gasket.
        When you put the pump back on, make sure you put it on the right way so that you are drawing water back into the cooling system and not sucking it in the wrong direction.

          Thank you all for the Replys about my situation. i also spoke with the Guys at Skidim.com today and had some good input from them too. Hopefully no major damage was done. I'll keep you posted! My new Impeller is on the was should be ready to be on the water this weekend!
