8122pbrainard -- Your "understanding" is dead wrong -- Walters units have been around for more than 50 years and are as bulletproof as any piece of marine equipment. You're wrong, too, CC stopped using Walters to save $$$$ with the CHEAP PCM design that doesn't spin the prop opposite the engine like the Walters. No dipstick either. No oil pump. No oil pressure gage. Noisy bevel gears just get noisier as they wear. Walters are made in good 'old USA !!!
I saw another site with fantasticfinish badmouthing Walters; guess this is just a coincidence that you are badmouthing Walters and promoting fantasticfinish . . . .
If there were any reliability problems, they wouldn't be around for more than 50 years and CC wouldn't have used Walters for more than 10 years. Suggest you stop spreading lies.
Anyone with doubts should call up CC's warranty department and ask them. You can also contact Walters directly for information (www.waltergear.com).
I tend to agree with the previous post. I think a little research would show you that Walters units are used in expensive/quality cruising sailboats, for which reliability is a life-saving consideration. Notice I say, "tend" because I have no personal knowledge of Walters, but I do have experience sailing large boats where engine/transmission reliability is a real issue.
