    white smoke

'99ob Ski Nautique with GT40 EFI

I get white smoke in the back of the boat, not much and only when I start pulling someone out of the water and at high speeds.

    It looks like water steam.

My temp gauge stays around the 160 marks doesn't really matter if the lake is at 55F or 74F like it is now the smoke stays the same.

I checked all around the motor and I see no leaks and the oil dosn't have a trace of water.

Anyone can tell me if this is normal or not.
    Thanks in advance.

I haven't had the opportunity to look back there for some time. Too busy either driving or skiing. But I do recall at one point seeing that type of wispy smoke while underway. I would think it's normal. And, I think that as long as your temp guage is normal and you don't have any water in your oil you are ok.

      Thanks SGY!

You make me feel less concerned. I need a bit of reassuring this boat is my little baby and I love it! Girlfriend gets a little jealous sometimes...hahaha

btw, I am like you I don't look at that much, it's my buddy that noticed that. He owns malibu response and he's always searching for something to complain on the CC...(friendly competition between boat owners....hahaha) Oh well one day he'll understand and he'll get a CC!!

The darn thing though is thats since he told me that, i am always looking in the mirror to check for the smoke and I do see it... So for the last week he got me all concern...

well if anyone could confirm that this is normal smoke or not would let me know if I should bring it to the dealer or not. 2 hours of driving is not something I am looking forward to...

I think what you are seeing is steam. Sometimes if you put it in reverse and get a little water back in the exhust, when you take off you will see steam.

          Thanks FatBoy,
that sounds like a good explanation, but in this case the smoke also occurs when I go full throttle after running for a while at 20-25mph.

          Anyone else have a explanantion?

Yup, I leave a nice trail of water vapor every time I haul arse. It looks like a nice plume of smoke out the rear. I know it is not oil because it evaporates very quickly.

Even when pulling a skier up I can see it. It just means the engine is making mad power, and the exhaust is really hot, so when the cold water hits the hot metal, it turns to water vapor.

Tell him if he had a Nautique he could boil some water too.

Yep....the steam. First time I took my boat out my better have was driving across the lake while I kicked back enjoying the new ride. I then got a panicked look that my friend noticed and told her to stop. Friend ask what was the problem and I told him about the white smoke and he produced a big smile telling me "It's steam dumb*$^."

I had never noticed it before, even behind a Nautique I had been in.... Guess I was just being extra sensitive. Anyway...good story all the same.

                      I'll agree that it's normal.
Your engines pushing out hot water into the cooler lake water.
See it on mine all the time.
