    Lead Additive

Ever since I've had my old 84, I've put a lead additive in the gas with every fill up. Is this something everyone with the older pre-unleaded engines does??

If I remember my AUTOMOTIVE history correctly, unleaded was federally mandated in model year 1975 for all cars. Wouldn't a '84 Nautique, or any boat, have used unleaded from the get-go? I would imagine any inboard with an automotive-based engine of that era would be unleaded. Can someone confirm or dispute?

I think NAUTI84 is correct. We have an '82 Ski Nautque 2001 and have always and have to put lead substitute in the tank whenever we fill it up.

If I remember right, my engine manual calls for leaded gas only. I believe the additive prevents the valve seats from deteriorating?

I had a 90 Ski Nautique and my dealer told me to use a lead additive. I would use the lead additive everytime I filled her up. I had the boat for 14 years and never had a problem with it. She always ran great! Even though I have a new 2004 206 Ltd, I kinda miss her... lots of memories and fun!

cast iron heads with 'soft valve seats' suffer from valve seat recesion. add the additive, but install harder seats when the heads get rebuilt.

              not a myth.

                tryan-
I trust your expertise. 'Nuff said. Perhaps you could add some more specifics to the discussion for me personally. What year did they STOP recommending leaded fuel based on the engine build? My '93 PCM manual (thanks Jeff, for the upload) makes mention of 89 octane fuel and using 87 octane with a 4 degree timing retardation as acceptable. Octane ratings for leaded fuels were higher than that, no? Maybe PCM was builing them for unleaded by then. What do you think?

im pretty sure that any of the 14 mm cylinder heads on the fords had hardened valve seats in them.

How do you tell which heads are 14mm? Are you talking about the spark plugs? What year did they start using those heads? I have just over 100 hours on mine and have never used a lead additive. The dealer(s) I've dealt with never even mentioned it. If I NEED to use it, I will. However, I'd rather put gas in the tank less often if the lead additive isn't needed. Thanks.

                        Hello all-
Just got off the phone with Mark at PCM Engine Group. John Givens at Correct Craft said they would be the authority in this matter. Mark said that as long as you have the 5/8" spark plugs, run "unleaded gas all day long". So, if you have to use the 13/16" socket to remove your plugs, keep putting in the lead additive. He asked what boat I had and said I didn't need the lead. I was interested to find the answer for everyone, and asked how to tell on any PCM engine whether you need the lead. Thus, the spark plug identifier.

                        Small plug=unleaded
                        Large plug=lead

Hope this helps everyone. Have a great day on the water.

I purchased a 1979 Ski Nautique last summer. It had all the original papers with it. The engine is a 351 Commander. The manual says to use leaded or low lead only. In bold letters it states not to use unleaded gasoline. I do not have a scannner but will be willing to fax this complete owners manual to anyone interested.
thanx to all who love Correct Crafts.
