over heating

today i idled for a few minutes and then ran it for a few minutes and turned off to fill the ballast and when i cranked it again the engine hot light was on and the temp was around 220ish. everything else is normal though. i decided to run it to get some air flow and the temp went back down to normal while going 21.7mph, but when i turn around to pick up the rider the temp slowly rises up to about 215. any idea's of where to look first?

Have you checked the impeller yet? That would be my first guess.

there could be a clog also---when the boat has some rpm it pulls more water and then at idle the clog allows the boat to heat up

also check for an air leak at the strainer...rubber o-ring.

i'll do that. i just had the impeller changed, but i'll check the strainer. if there is a clog where would i want to look? another question, when i had my mc they told me to flip my hitch from normal, but it seems that with the nauti trailer i want to flip it back over so i can get more prop guard clearance. yes/no or doesn't really matter

My thought would be the flush tap being left on, if this is left on it has the same results on the water as you say - as when idling no water gets to the engine, but when having forward motion, some water gets to the engine to cool it down. Either way, if this is the case, your impeller would be poked now. As above, it sounds like an air leak at some point between the pick up and impeller, or impeller itself stuffed - and either way the impeller will now defiantly need looking at/replacing.

Personaly I wouldn't and havn't on the ocasion I did this to my SANTE 220 - it was straight in (was due for its service anyway), with impeller changed. We ran it like "this" for 8 minutes before I figured out the flush tap had been left on and was starving the engine of water - we then rode for another 2 hours thinking "she will be right", when they took out the impeller, which was only 56 hours old from last service, it was totaly poked and 20% of what new would be.

Runing like you are without 1- sorting out what your air leak is, and then 2- checking/changing your impeller puts you at risk of your impeller giving up and you overheating the engine and/or being stuck out in the middle of the lake.

thanks. i am going to go take a look in a bit and see what i can find, but i think i'm going to use it being that i can get an easy tow if it does stay over heating. i certainly wouldn't if the temp didn't go down at speed and ill keep it off and engine box open when not pulling someone.

how can i check to see if the flush tap is left on? it's an 05 330hp with closed loop

I can't help but think that's a horrible, horrible idea.... While Limping is there to protect the engine it's still very bad to engage it. Especially when you can, and have time to fix the problem. That's like your arm going numb and saying, "Well, I'll wait to have the heart attack and then stop smoking." The limp mode protects it from exploding, but it's still not good to do...

ya i agree. i decided to take it to the shop monday rather than use it.
