    Outdrive problem need help

To keep the this related, I have sport nautique and ski off this while the wifes and kids eat, sleep and rucus on my father inlaws boat.

That being said, father inlaws 24 regal, with a 350 mercruiser and outdrive hit ground and munched his prop. We put a new one on and now the engine revs when going over 2200 rmp. Thus he cant get to plain and has to putt around.

Its like his clutch is slipping. Is this a damper plate? Not really familar with out-drives.

Anyone have an idea where to start? If it is the damper plate we have to remove the engine to get to it. NOT FUN....

    THOUGHTS?

I/O props have an internal hub which can slip. You can put the boat in gear (ENGINE OFF) and if you can turn the prop by hand or with a piece of wood as a pry bar (it should be hard) that would be the problem. It could be internal gears, too, there are lots of parts in there that can get teeth chewed off when you hit stuff. Now you're talking getting a real mechanic involved, or someone familiar with the outdrives. That's why we all like inboards so much, but you knew that already...
How 'bout a little reverse action...

There is a rubber piece between the prop and the splined hub as Squam noted. Your symptom is classic for a loose rubber filler.

However....you say you put a new prop. Was it NEW or did you repair your old one. If you repaired your old one, you'll need to fix the fubber filler. It is possible, but unlikely, that the filler is bad on a new prop.

I don't think you have gear problems. Not critical, but which outdrive unit do you have (Alpha, Bravo, etc.) and what year is it?

I've been fixin' mecruiser i/o's all my life....because they been breaking down all my life. They chronically need repair. Reply back with your progress.

        Man I LOVE THIS SITE>

My Father-law is a machanic has his own shop. He knows about boats but not everthing. I end up showing him a thing a two after I do my internet reasearch. HA ha ha...

Same prop just reworked, and its funny you mentioned the ruber thing cause when I saw it I asked him what the **** that was. He said a spacer. didnt know much about what it did. Are you saying it just may need that? CRAZY!!!!!

Currently the boat runs and shifts fine. The simptom is simply starts slipping like a clutch after 2200rpms

Not sure if its an alpha or bravo. What I do know is its not an OMC.

can you buy the rubber piece seperatly?

If this does the trick. I will once again have another one on the old man.... HA HA HA.... CANT BEAT THE NET.... AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WWW.PLANTETNAUTIQUE.COM

The rubber hub is a separate buy. Your prop shop should have put a new hub with such a repair. My local shop will not repair broken blades or munched up blades without putting in a new hub. I guess they've been there; done that and had them come back with a grumpy boater.

I'd get them to do it for you. But,

Here is a link to a how to: http://www.deltaprop.com/howto/Drive_Sleeve.pdf

Here is a link to the parts at delta prop: http://www.deltaprop.com/shopdisplay...26+Accessories

Be sure to use your coupon code.

P.S. The rubber hub is there just for this purpose. If it wasn't there, there would be a few more munched up parts in the guts of the outdrive.
