    Engine Whine

I recently purchased a 1997 Ski Nautique with the GT-40 engine. Like a couple of other similar boats on my lake, I notice a high pitched whine coming from the engine, especially at higher speeds. I figure it's a bearing somewhere, and am just wondering if anyone has figured out where it is located. This will obviously dictate whether or not it is worth replacing. I have a 1994 GMC Yukon SUV that had a similar whine and it ended up being the AC compressor, which I eventually broke down and replaced (even though it wasn't broken) because I couldn't stand the whine anymore.

    Thanks.

    RE: Engine Whine

How many Nautiques have you been in? The 1.23 transmission has a pretty characteristic whine to it- they all do it.

Maybe my ears have been subjected to too much loud music, but my 98 with a GT-40 is quieter at 3,400 rpm than it is at 2,400 rpm.

Does your boat have a CNC finished prop on it like an Acme or an OJ XMP? Those props have been known to sing in the higher rpm range and growl when you bring them to idle.

I own an 86 nautique and now a 97. My friend has a 1990 that has the same whine - I don't know if he has a reduction gear or not. I'm not sure what time of prop or finish it has - I do know that it is a four blade brass one that came on the boat when it was purchased new by the original owner.

        Thanks.

'87 would have had a 1:1. The 1.23 reduction tranny debuted in '89, and the vast majority of direct drive Correct Crafts have it. Sounds like thats what youre hearing.
