    dripless packing

last summer a nailed a rock which in return bent the prop and i accelarated too much and vibrated the packing gland and broke it-----it was replaced

it still takes on water from the gland(for sure)---it is not a lot but it drives me nuts---

is there any adjustment to these things? or will it have to be replaced again?

    RE: dripless packing

Bullet, When you bent the prop, was the shaft checked for straightness? It would be the bent shaft that would take out the stuffing box. The standard stuffing box is water lubricated so it must drip. If you have the regular older flax packing it should drip 3 to 4 times per minute. The new nerely dripless Gortex teflon packing needs to drip 1 to 2 per minute. Adjustments are made by tightening the large packing nut and then locking it in place with the jam nut on it's back side. It should not run hot! Warm at first but then cool.

The dripless system replacements are in my opinion over rated. Expensive to buy and take time to install. The shaft needs to come out and that can be a experience in itself!

Make sure your shaft is straight, tighten up the packing or repack with the Gortex.

buxton marine did the repairs, i assume they checked the shaft....

there is no vibration in the boat---

the packing is not "dripping" is is leaking-----bilge will turn on for 15 seconds every 10-15 min and when we are wakeboarding it will leak like crazy and it seems to bilge constantly

sounds like it needs to be tightened. Check out this thread:
