I have white smoke coming out of exhaust

I have a 97 Super Sport with a Gt-40 and I have noticed white smoke coming out of the exhaust. My oil levels are good, so it cant be that..My engine temp is running higher than normal, maybe its not getting cooled properly? Its running around 180 and it normally runs closer to 160. Has anyone ever experienced something like this?? Could the smoke be coming from my enigine over heating..maybe I need to replace my impeller?

Thanks for your help in advance.

You should replace your impeller every year ideally. I would take it out and check it for sure. How much smoke are we talking here?
How 'bout a little reverse action...

check your strainer, too, could easily be that.

You got it. Engine needs a little more water. Replace the impeller.

I havent gotten a chance to check out my impeller, but it was replaced last fall when I got the boat and I havent even put 100 hours on it since then. I wouldnt think it has already gone bad. HOWEVER... Its interesting you suggest something about my strainer WakeSLayer.. It has white stuff in it?? whats that about??

          Thanks Again,,

no, it would have weeds or muck in it, and restrict water flow. Or, if you lose the O-ring in it, you get an air leak that will also raise the temp.

Sometimes impellers go bad. I went through 2 impellers in on month on my 03 SANTE, been great ever since. I don't own it but I do still service it.

stop running the boat or else the water pump will warp. that,s what happened to me earlier this season. in my case the impeller exploded. I stopped the boat, let it cool down, ran it for 30secs towards the dock...shut it down...start again once it was cool...still managed to wreck my water pump

chrishopf and Alan-s, hopefully you don't run the engine dry without water hooked up even for very short times. It will chew up impellers real quick. FYI, I have a 64 Interceptor that I haven't needed impellers (double cavity RWP) for 28 years! My 54 I did change out when I rebuilt the engine 26 years ago and it really didn't need it!!!

RE: I have white smoke coming out of exhaust

Some trivia...some may know this already.

Blue smoke is from burned oil...usually ring or valve seal problem.
Black smoke is from excess, unburned fuel...usually fuel problem.
White smoke is actually steam, not smoke. In autos, usually means block/head damage. In inboards, means the engine is way short on water and boiling what it little it has.

If you actually have white smoke, and it isn't steam.....then that means you must have just elected a new Pope.

"8122pbrainard"-- I have never ran my boat out of water..what in this thread makes you think that Alan-S and I have run them without a water hook-up??

Thanks everyone for your help and input..... I am out of the country this week, but am planning on replacing my impeller when I get back home before I take the boat back out. I will keep eveyone informed..

Is it blowing steam "white smoke" all the time or just when you hit it full throtle? Every nautique I have ever had does it for a second when it really get on it.

Yeh.. It has always smoked/steamed alittle when I first crank it up... But the otherday it started staying like, even at full throttle , and got even worse once I started pulling someone.. We unfortunately had to call it a day and head in..Now Im down in St. John and cant stop thinking about getting it fixed. I miss my boat!!!!!!

                            Thanks again,

I made the comment as a recommendation only. There are lots of people out there that will "test" to make sure the boat starts before it goes into the water. I'm glad to hear that you're not one of them. Alan-s went through 2 impellers in two months so somethings up there!
