I have to trailer a Sport for a long distance (1200 miles). Is shrink wrap my only good choice to keep all the road sludge out (especially if it rains) or are the better alternatives?

I always tow my boat covered. I agree though that the cover should fit tightly. Mine is tight, and I still have a problem with the cover rubbing the paint on the top of the windshield. I know one member of this site is considering having his windshield polished. I wonder how that would look on my boat... hmm...
For you SAN owners, do you have any trouble with your seat bottoms flying out of your boats when you pull without a cover? The one time I tried towing without a cover I almost lost a seat. Luckily I saw it in my mirror, and was able to stop and throw the cover on before I lost anything.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. NautiqueJeff,
I would try towing with the bow windblock cover in place if you want to tow with your cover off. You might contact one of the dealers and see if you can get the foam that the boats have around the windshield frames when they are shipped to the dealers. This would stop any rubbing on your windshield frame.

BTW -- My cover has snaps instead of cords or straps, if that makes a difference.
For short distance I take the cover off the boat at home and toss it in the garage. Less time on the ramp, more time on the water  I have never had a seat blow out, doesn't mean it can't happen!

I have seen my seat levetating a few times. I kinda freaks you out when running down the road at 60+ MPH and your seat is starting to fly. Most of the time it is because the seats are not firmly set into position. I have since started putting my wakeboard right in front of the rear seats with it laying on the bindings, and the bottom of the board creating a ramp that diverts the air above the front edge of the seat. This keeps the wind from catching the edge of the seat, and I have not had a problem since.
I tow with and without my cover. I have not had a problem either way, but I check the cover about every 100 miles. It is also the type that has a drawstring in it to secure it around the boat.

I have always towed my boats uncovered for two reasons, the primary one being the gelcoat. However I have also had a problem with looser covers vibrating themselves apart in the wind. Big holes in the covers are kinda expensive to replace. As for things blowing out, the only thing I have lost was a cake pan (it was full of fresh baked carrot cake too :-( )
