I have a 92 SN with a 351. I keep the boat in the water. Is there anyway to check the waterpump to make sure it is working correctly? Or do I just keep an eye on the temp guage. What temp should it be running at?
160 - 170 ish... somewhere in there. Your pump, which has the impellar in it, should be located on the left side of the engine, as you look at the front of it, and it should be on the opposite belt as the alternator. You can loosen that belt, remove the bolts for the pump and replace that impellar, which you should probably do every season. Once you do it once, it will only take you 15 minutes to a half hour, depending... Pretty easy.
Also, mark both the pump pieces before you take it apart with an arrow that comes together, as well as which side is the inside. I've seen these put on the wrong way, which sucks water out of the engine, and makes it run just a little hot (hahaha) when someone was a little sleepy putting it back together. Takes two seconds with a sharpie and avoids the possibility of paddling back to the dock.
I also lube up my impellar with Vaseline, so that the first few revolutions are a little easier on 'er... I hope that helps...
What makes you think it's not performing properly? You can also check your strainer for obstructions if it's running hot. Sometimes you can suck some schtuff in there, which prohibits efficient water delivery, which is bad.

Dave, You can also do the bucket test on the pump. Pull the suction hose on the pump and put it in a 5 gal. bucket. At 2000RPM, it should pump the 5 gals. in about 20 seconds.
What's your antique boat?
Thanks for the info on the bucket test. I will give that a try. The antique is a 58 Chris Craft Cavalier with a 4 cyl flathead Hercules engine. Only 60 hp so not enough power to ski or board.
