    Transmission Cooler Maintenance

    The owner's manual for my Ski Nautique 2002 w/ GT 40 & PCM transmission suggests to periodically check the transmission oil cooler water inlet. How often do you guys do this? I don't need to winterize so I have never done this. The previous owner may have done it last year but I don't know. Do I need to remove both hoses where they attach near the port side of the engine and clean them out? The manual just notes the inlet. Is the inlet hose the one routed to the top of the tranny or the bottom? Manual says to look at the honey comb filter for debris and remove with needle noses pliers before reassembly.

    For the most part your strainer takes care of this stuff. Not a bad idea to take a look at it, I suppose, though I have never on any of my boats.

      Usually need to do that when you have been running in weeds or have lost an impeller. Anything else should be taken care of by the strainer inline with the raw water intake.

      Be carefull when you pull the hoses off. The cooler is made of brass or copper and is very soft.

        Yep, former owner had my cooler ruined by over tighting the hose clamp, result air sucked in and no cooling at idle.
        Hard to diagnose.
        Cooler has almost 1/4" honycomb so small chance of trapping dirt.
        Strainer has aprox 1/32" screen, so what passes are very small particles.

          I believe the raw water strainer is a Correct Craft option, that not all boat manufactures that use PCM engines use. It you keep the strainer clean, it will catch most, if not all, the debris in the engine cooling water. If the strainer gets partiality clogged, is is possible for more debris to get sucked through the screen, and end up in the transmission water cooler.
          Because the strainer is an option, PCM wants you to take a look at the transmission cooler inlet side.

            DanielC good point. I believe all Nautiques have the strainer, but not very many other mfg practiced this until recently, if even now.
