    Steering Box

hi, looking for a bit of advice. i have a 2004 nautique 206 with 290 hours on it. just drove a friends brand new 2008, and couldn't believe the difference.

his steering was way, way better - much tighter over all. mine feels incredibly light, and has a fair bit of free play in it. if i back the tuning fin on the rudder all the way left, the boat will run straight but with probably 15 deg. free play to each side of 12:00

the transmission engages much more smoothly, and with better feel.

also, when i start my boat up the guages always default - the left digital display to read hours, and the right one to read P or S for the pickup. i promptly reset them to read Hours Remaining, and depth. on the new boat, if you change the guages they stay changed. mine reset every time.

    Soooo, the questions are:
    a) will changing out my steering box bring the steering up to the level of the new one? if so, how do i find out which one i need and how to do it?
    b) is there any way, other than replacing the guages (yikes $$$), that i can get the displays to stop resetting?
    c) is there any adjustment on the transmission cable that i should be lubricating/inspecting?

ps - broke 2 ribs skiing late july, so i've had LOTS of time as the designated driver for everybody else this summer. just pulled and winterized the boat over the weekend.

    thanks all.

    doug
