forgot to mention that all of the air between the exhaust and the cylinders will need to be displaced or compressed before water will get up there.............

Been there done that. How I keep a spare in my boat. If you can buy one for 10$ buy 2 for 20$. I was backing my boat up which forced water in the exhaust. I don't know a BEAVER had eaten mine.

I have to completely agree with Andrew on this! Without the flapper, it will be tough to get water all the way back up to the engine. It wasn't untill the mid 70's that flappers even became popular. I have never seen damage caused by water intrusion via the exhaust. Bad exhaust manifolds yes! Don't forget that on all the newer boats, the water has to somehow make it past all the baffles in the mufflers too!

Now if you have 2000 lbs of ballast plus 6 people in the boat, things are different!

I certainly get the point = $24 for a part just do it. However, I see boats all the time that don't have flap covers, capitan call exhaust ect. most of the power boats have direct exhaust with no flaps.
