What is everybody paying their mechanic?

What is a reasonable rate for marine mechanics these days? ASE cert. auto mechanics used to get between $45-65 an hour. My marine mechanic is charging $90.

What does an ASE Mechanic get now, not what you used to pay them sometime in the past, would be an more accurate comparison.
Quick oil change automotive rates do not apply, they are a loss leader to get you into the shop, so they can charge you for other items, and make up the difference.
the last two workorders for work I had done, $90.00 per hour.

I am looking at getting a couple things done on my wife's Mustang, and based on 5-8 hours of work, he told me $400, for a November off-season job.

My dealer is $75 if you bought your boat from them and a $100/hr if you did not. They offer a discount to loyal customers.

I don't pay myself anything. And I'm getting tired of it too. Yellow_Flash_Colorz:

^^Ha. I do nearly all my own stuff on my boats. I already did the carb, disty, fuel pump, alternator, and fuel line earlier this year. but i just do not want to mess with the steering cable, cutlass bearing, and engine alignment on the old school boat. I figure $400 is a great deal for those projects to just fix themselves.
I may end up doing it anyway in the meantime, but there is a reason these guys get paid.

Still a little confused. I am not accusing or saying these guys don't earn it, but I have done my own labor for a while but this is my first boat. I am letting my dealer handle a few jobs for me because I don't have the time to learn right now and I want to get the boat out a few more times before the end of the season.

I guess what I am saying is, I don't mind paying the going rate, but I don't want someone to rake me over the coals either. Just post up current rates please, thanks!

OK..cool. I guess they are middle of the road. They are worth it! My mech has taken time to explain a few things to me and shown me some things I can do on my own. So he is probably saving me money in the long run. Thanks-K

I really don't worry about the rates on mechanics. It's the CEO's and equal of large corporations that pull in the crazy $$ that bother me!!
$100 give or take isn't a bad figure.

I had to pay $156 ($100 labor) for a first break-in oil change from a CC dealer. It was absolutely absurd considering they overfilled my motor with oil by about 1.5 quarts. Now that I got the warranty oil change done, I will be doing my own work from here on out.

My used boat came from a CC dealer with a "fresh" oil change.....also a quart over. Good thing I checked it.

The boat needs to floating to check the oil. it also need to have been run. If the boat has sat overnight, and you check the oil, it will probably be high, because oil has ran out of internal passages in the engine. Many oil filters also do not have a good anti drainback valve, and if the boat has sat for a while, that would also make your oil level read high.

boat does not need to b floating to check
but in needs to be on the trailer (hieght wise) as if it was in the water

hence that is why most crappy shops pay crappy $ to their techs who r not even trained right
