    High oil pressure

My oil pressure is reading Hi 80 Psi. I removed the sending unit and put a manual guage and it reads consistant with the dash guage (HI). I changed my oil & filter and it still reads Hi. I am using Napa Gold 1515 & 40 wt. valvoline VR-1 racing oil. The engine temperature, performance & sound is good > anyone have this problem? Is there a hi lo port on the oil pump causing this?

    Thanks John

    RE: High oil pressure

Which engine do you have? I get somewhere in the range of 60-80psi on my Fords with the VR1 20w50, so I wouldnt say that what youre seeing is abnormal. Good choice on the oil and filter, by the way- especially if you have a Ford.

GT-40 ford. My oil pressure in the past ranged from 30 - 50. The increase in pressure happened suddenly. I am going to try a manual guage that can read 100+. Thanks for your reply.

My opinion is that 40w oil is tooo high of a viscosity. Why would you chose that?

I believe 40W is what PCM recommends for that engine. I am sure that is why he uses it.

That seams very odd to me that someone would recommend straight 40w in a cold water cooled engine.

On a cold winter day, I'm surprised the gaskets and gage don't blow out from the pressure.

Q - do you let your motor warm up before taking off???

If yes, then go with straight 40, if no then run a xx-40w multigrade.

I think that is a little high. Recheck with a known good mechanical guage. Does the pressure stay high when the engine is warmed up, at idle?

                  RE: High oil pressure

I changed my oil filter (again) > pressure still Hi. I checked pressure again with a new PSI guage > pressure still HI. I pumped this data to PCM, Discount Marine & 2 warranty techs they came up with a control valve spring in the oil pump is stuck open (most likely), or a major blockage in the oil passages (unlikely). Remedy is pull the engine and drop the oil pan to check both problems. The problem if not fixed could blow the oil filter seal out if pressure exceeds 80 PSI. All said this is a very uncommon problem and usually pressure reading problems lie in the sending unit and gauge.

AirTool > 40 wt Valvoline VR-1 racing oil is the number one recommened lubricant for GT-40 engine, this was confirmed by PCM, Discount Marine and the warranty techs. Although I don't ski in water temps below 65 degrees but if I did you are right a thinner oil should be used.

Sounds like a winter project and the ski season has come to a close.

                  Thanks for your input
