    RE: oil

I think I have answered this before---
In a GT-40 use Valvoline VR1 40 "racing " oil. Carquest has it nationally, I understand.
Use the Motorcraft FL1-A oil filter. They are at WalMart.

      RE: oil

The nice thing is that for the first time in year and years and years, I can buy one oil for all three of my engines. I use the Shell Rotella 15/40 in my F250, my 1800 horsepower race car engine, and my 05 196.

FWIW, I have a friend that's a chemist for a 3rd party lab in the oil industry. He has tested just about every oil made. He said that there is basically 3 bases that pretty much all the companies use. Mainly because there are truly only about 3 companies that refine engine oil. They then sell that base stock to others. But anyway, he says that in their tests where they test for breakdown under heat, all of the 15/40 diesel oils perform very much the same. The difference is where the wax crystals in the base start to bind to gether and block the filter, which is somewhere close to -20 F, not something we'll ever get to hopefully in a nautique. The CFPP point is basically determined by what additive they use for that. Some mfr's use more or less, therefore the cold operating low threshold could be different. One non synthetic dino oil performed above the others, almost on par with the synthetics and that was the Castrol GTX. He went into a long explanation of the ingredients and how they break down and lubricate which I heard as "Blah Blah, Blah Blah, Blah Blah".

        RE: oil

Follow the specs in the PCM manual, and you cannot go wrong with oil selection. My boat uses straight SAE 40, and I get the Motorcraft Filter(I have a Ford engine in my boat). The variable viscosity oil like 10W-40 for example will get too thin on a hot day, and your oil pressure will drop when you are at idle. I have always used PENNZIOL and never had any problems. The key is change your oil and filter religiously every 50 hours, and when you winterize...

Here's a link to the API description of each oil rating, I tried to copy the table and paste it here but it lost the formatting. Scroll down to the second page of the pdf and I believe all the SL, SM, SJ questions can be answered.

FYI: I believe 10w-40 will behave just like a straight 40 weight at high temperatures, it will not thin out. The drawback to multi weight oils (especially 10w/40) is the amount of polymers they have to add to dino oil to achieve that operating range since those polymers tend to breakdown and gunk up your engine if you don't change it on a regular basis.

I agree 100% with the "key" being changing it religiously though...
