    Stalling 82 Nautiquev// Starter Disengage

I have an '82 SN 2001 that developed a strange problem last weekend. When I went to start the boat (already had run for 2 + hours this day) the engine started then stalled. On additional attemps tot start the engine would start and then stall acting like it was starving for fuel. I have confirmed that fuel (clean and un-obstructed, clean filters and fuel/water seperator have been cleaned /reaplaced) are reaching the carburator. During the attempts to start the engine the starter would not disengage on occasion. I have replaced the starter rlay and this seems to have soloved the starter engagement problem. I have also noticed that when the key is in the RUN position the volt meter and fule gauge do not always read as they should (engine is not running) then by wiggling the switch they read correctly. Could the switch be causing the engine not to remain running or am I headed in the wrong direction?
Please help as I need to be on the water!

I had a similar problem with my 84 2001 a while back. It turned out the wiring under the dash had developed some corrosion between the wires and the crimps. Jiggling the wires would produce temporary solutions.

The EE's at work told me to add solder to the offending connections-to add solder to the crimped joint. I did so and haven't had a problem since.

If you do this, you'll be laying on your back soldering over your head. If you're an amateur like me, you'll drip solder on your carpeting if you don't cover it, and on your head if you're not careful. You'd be crazy to do it without safety glasses.

Keep in mind the marine starter has a centrifugal pin system that keeps the startes gears engages until it reaches a certain speed. This prevents sparks from the starter gear hitting a moving flywheel.

Got the problem fixed. Repalced the ignition switch and then found a loose fuse connection next to the ignition switch. Probably spent more $$ on the relay and the ignition switch than may have been requried but I am on the water and running fine without worries!
