    Winterizing GT40 (351 Cleveland)

Does anyone know how many gallons of anti-freeze (rv type) to fill this engine. Heater has been drained and a by-pass hose installed on block so no additional anti-freeze needed for the heater and lines. Do I just fill untill it comes out the exhaust? I have put in three gallons so far. :?:

    Any help,
    Thanks

The GT40s are a windsor motor, not a cleveland and 3 gallons is about right on them. I always tale out the thermostat and dump 2 gallons there and another half on each manifold

My bad! The 351 Cleveland was last made in 1974. I don't know what I was thinking when I was posting my subject line. Thanks for your input.

No need to take out the T-stat. Just pour it into the output hose from the RWP and it'll go right in via the bypass on the T-stat housing as long as the block is empty. It'll also get the manifolds just fine using this method.

I use three but that is only because I have a heater and fill it up too.

3 is right on the money. You can even blow what's left in that hose through the manifolds so it won't spill out when you let go of the hose.

Interesting, as mine always takes a complete 4 gallons including heater . Are you guys drawing in anti-freeze in via the intake or winterizing according to the manual? I've always done my '01 as described by the manual and the antifreeze won't start coming out I've put in nearly 4 gallons. I don't stop pouring it in until pink starts coming out the exhaust. Is that what you guys do?

Not trying to stir the pot or anything, as apparently I'm either doing it differently than others or my 351 has more cooling capacity than others.

Maybe my manifolds are clogged up but I did not have enough head pressure with the ~12" hose from the t-stat housing to the RWP to push A/F through the exhaust system. This was with no heater or shower, just under 3 gallons. This is also on a 1988 boat so your heads and intake manifold are going to be different.

That's a good observation. I've had the same block in my '94 Sport and '79 Ski, but don't recall how much they required.

My 93 and 97 ski's both took exactally 3 gallons and it started to drip from the exhaust. I put it in the hose right off the transmission coller and let it run until all 3 are gone. Both have/had heaters.

My engine is also tilted with the old 1:1 transmission, but it seems as though there are others on here with the GT-40 heads and newer intakes still taking 3 gallons though.
