How to replace shaft packing, 94 SN.

I bought the packing from a dealer and am familiar with the general procedure, but it seems that I have enough packing to wrap around the shaft more than once, maybe 1.5 times. So I got to wondering if it matters which way I wrap it. Seems there could be a prefered direction given the shaft is rotating.

    Can anyone comment on this?

cut the packing into pi * diameter lengths and stager the gap. the number of rings of packing is relative to how often you want to replace it and what will fit i.e 3-5 on the prop shaft.

one or 1.5 ring(s)/piece of packing and it's gonna leak and or sink. i would recommend a search.

Checked the length and its 18 inches. So for 1" diameter shaft I should get at least 5 wraps (5x3.2=16")

So I cut the packing into pieces equal to the shaft circumference and then stack them with the Joining ends offset.

I just removed the original factory packing from my 2000 and it was 4 rings of 3/16"
