    prop rebuild, steering box question

    2 questions:

I have an ACME 422 prop that I mangled. where is the best exchange a prop? i am in Canada so will be shipping

also, my steering is very loose (2004 206, 300 hours) compared to the new ones. will changing the steering box and hose help? where do i order the parts.

    thanks all,

    doug

I'm not aware of any "exchange a prop" services. Have it rebuilt (if rebuildable!) or, as mentioned the best option would be to send it directly to Acme.

If your steering is simply loose, tighten (or repack) the rudder port stuffing box. Since you have only 300 hours on the boat, I'd say this is your problem. If you are referring to excessive back lash in the steering, try a new cable (from the helm to the rudder arm). Be careful, this cable is one of the few items that must be a CC OEM part. It's a special length and throw.

If you need it repaired, email Bill Weeks at Acme. His email address is bweeks@acmemarine . Repair cost is $120 + shipping unless it needs some welding.

I dont believe Acme does all their own repairs- at least that used to be the case. Either way, Acme wont repair the prop any differently that any other qualified shop. Ive heard good things about repairs handled by Delta- and you should save some $$ to boot.

Along the lines of what 8122 mentioned, My 05' 206 has a remote grease fitting (Zerk) for the rudder in the trunk. The rear center of the trunk has a black plastic cover, once removed you should see the fitting there.

Actually, they do their own repairs as a lot of places do not have the proper prop blocks for Acme props. I found that going to Acme direct was cheaper than any of the local shops.

I know they do some, but do they do all of their own repairs? I dont believe so- I know they subbed out a certain percentage of the work in the past. Youre correct about the blocks, but many many shops do have them. Besides needing the correct blocks, theres nothing special about repairing a CNC prop. I had a local shop do one of mine. Many here have had great experiences with Delta. Acme's repair service is one of the more expensive options, and some people have had problems with their work in the past. Do a search.

                  Good info! thanks everyone.

i took pictures of the prop, and sent them to two places in Canada. 1 quote was for $150 - $200 plus shipping, the other was for $160 max, shipping 1 way included.

when the snow melts, i'll look at the rudder items.
