how long can you store gas until it degrades too much? i'd love to stock up before prices go through the roof, but don't know if it is a feasible idea.

RE: gas longevity
Short answer, I think you should be ok to store it for about 7-9 months, I think. My opinion. Do not take this as the gospel truth.
I would definately put fuel stablizer in it, and that would increase the cost of the gas you store. You will also need sealed containers you can store it in, increasing the cost even further.
Have you carefully considered the safety issues? What if the area you are storing it in is involved in a fire? Do you have a safe secure place to store the containers?
Having said all that, I do not think it is worth the risk, or the hassle to do it. And this comes from somebody who has taken an extra 25 or thirty gallons of gas, in cans, to Lake Shasta.

RE: gas longevity
I'm no expert on this but according to the label on the back of my container of STA-BIL, a single dose of fuel stabilizer will keep your fuel fresh for up to 12-months...for storage up to two years, double the dose. To DanielCs point, fuel stabilizer will add ~$0.25/gal to your fuel cost for single dose.2003 SANTE

RE: gas longevity
JUST-IN-TIME is right on.
Stabilizer does not stop the molecular attraction of water to the ethanol in the fuel and the eventual fazing that occurs in your fuel tank. Stabilizer will keep the actual gasoline good for 12 months. At the Marina I work at we encourage people to run their boats to the point of being almost out of gas, and if they run them out of gas thats even better. Then we will add a pre-mixed gallon of our special blend of gasoline, stabilizer, 2stroke oil (very very little, works the same as fogging oil), a fuel system clenser and run that into their system to ensure that there will be minimal issues come spring for their fuel lines, and carburetors, or injectors being clogged. This helps avoid all the other issues that can be devastating for a customer with a 3month long boating season looking to maximize their time on the water.
