Prop Nut

How tight does the prop nut need to be? On my boat I noticed that I can't torque the nut down because the slots for the cotter pin don't line up with the hole on the drive shaft. Therefore I have to loosen the nut a little and install the cotter pin. Its loose enough where I can move it with my hands. Is this a problem? Does the nut need to be tight, and if so how can I torque it up enough to line up the slots on the nut to the hole in the shaft. Thanks in advance for the help.

I would never ever sail with a prop nut that can be moved by hands......Use your muscles and a big tool to get it in place or buy another nut. Maybe the new nut is a little bit different and the cotter pin will fit.

Take a block of wood and place it between the bottom and the prop. Then tighten the crown nut until you can put the cotter pin. It doesn't have to be gorilla tight just snug. Also make sure the cotter pin is stainless or it could rust away.
