Mikeski is right, an automotive alternator on a boat is not as big a deal as some make it out to be. Should you do it? No. Will it hurt the boat? No. It works exactly the same as a marine alternator, the only differance is that a marine is "ignition protected" it is manufacture in a manner that prevents or greatly reduces the chance of producing a spark that may result in the ignition of fumes. I would change it but you were only in danger if you had a gas leaks or build up of fumes. It will not burn up or cause you any probelms unless it was connected to old 50 amps wiring.
