79 454 transmission

now that i have completely rebuilt the motor and bought all new accessories, and ran the engine which runs great... when i put it in gear it dies. someone told me that the transmission is probably gone. can it be anything else? do i have to pull the motor back out or can i just remove the tranny while in the boat? any advise will be helpful. thanks

I highly doubt its the transmission. My first guess is that the idle is set too low- it needs to be set while the boat is in gear. Try bumping it up and then dialing it in.
