    Water in Battery Compartment

    ('84 SN 2001)

My battery compartment seems to be filling up with a couple of inches of water each time I take her out on the water...

As you may know, the 2001's have two identical compartments (in line with one another front the front to back). The front one is where the battery is stored and the back was origionally used as a cooler.

The origional owner of the boat wired up the cooler for a second battery. It currently doesn't have a second battery installed, but I intend on putting one in.

In the back of each compartment there is a drain. I figured that the battery compartment drain flowed under the cooler and connected together where they attach to the bilge. Since water is not desired in either compartment, I went ahead and filled the rather crude drain hole that flows into the bilge with a fair amount of silcone (temporary fix). Since doing this I have managed to keep the old cooler box dry, but still have water building up in the battery compartment. I am assuming now that the battery compartment drain does not meet up with the cooler drain.

    QUESTION:
    - Are these drains (in the cooler and battery compartment factory installed?
    - Any ideas as to where the battery compartment is draining into (or how the water is entering the battery compartment? I have felt around in the bilge area and for the life of me cannot figure out where the drain is going?
    - Would it be okay if I merely plugged up the drain in the battery box with silcone? My only consern is where else this water would go.
    - Is there a cavity under the battery compartment that is filling up with water? Should I be concerned? I don't want water to be sitting in an area it should be. Right now I am merely sponging out the water in the compartment after each use.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

    THANKS!!!

Both drian to the bilge Get rubber stoppers from a marine store and use those to plug the holes. That way if water gets in from a wet bather you can drain them.
