Impeller Problem

Hey guys,

My boat was overheating. I pulled my impeller and it is trash--no fins are on the impeller at all. There were three fins in the housing, but I don't know where the rest of them are. Do I need to do anything to clear where they went? Perhaps the thermostat housing?

Hopefully you'll find them in the t stat housing. if not, start checking the hoses to the exhaust manifold and then the manifolds. If pieces made their way into the manifolds, it can be a real PITA to get them out.

Have you been running the boat without water? I'm one who feels that even starting briefly (without water) in the driveway it to make sure it starts at the ramp will damage the impeller.

I know it doesn’t seem logical but most me the time the impeller pieces fall into the inlet hose, just the opposite of what you would expect. Take the pump inlet hose loose on both ends and shake it out.

No. It is just overdue to change I guess.

Ok. That makes sense. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't need to check the thermostat housing or anything like that.

most get caught in the cooler, i have seen some in the vdrive

Part of my winter storage is the removal of the raw water pump. I remove the impeller and
inspect it . I keep it out of the housing that way it doesn't have half of the fins folded over
in one position for 6-7 months. Seems to work I have only changed it twice in 20 years.

Thanks. I don't winterize though. I ride or atleast use my boat year round.

If that is the case I wound make a practice of removing the impeller at least
once a year for inspection or replacement .

....or every 100 hours? ....if your use is more than 100 hours per year.
