    slow oil drain!

So i did some maint. today, installed the perko flush, replaced the impeller and then tried to change the oil, ran the boat for a bit, then pulled the oil drain hose thru the drain hole in the hull and opened the filler cap, but the oil was draining SO slowly, i was scared i lost all my oil somewhere but checked it and it was full as i last left it! what's the secret to draining the oil out of that hose? thanks alot in advance.

I have found the drain hose generally runs slow even with warm/hot oil. If you can let it drain for several hours or overnight it will eventually come out, if you want the best solution out there which can also be used for the trans get a Suck Up Vacuum pump from Ski Dim.

I'll second the recommendation Quinner. Faster and a lot better than crawling under the boat. When warm you can usually get the oil out in under a half hour when warm.

couple of things that have worked for me:

take the oil fill cap off.

if it's draining very slowly, try moving the hose around in the bilge, it's gotta be at a decline of an angle. the hose is so long, sometimes the slope of the hose will be very flat, slow drain.

I got a buddy in the boat to pick the hose up and down in the bilge. When it was full flowing i yelled and he checked the angle there and placed the hose to drain that way.

          20mins, full drain.

Yeah, if the oil is nice and warm (engine was up to normal operating temp) it should drain in less than 30 minutes with a nice gradual slope of the drain hose.

Have any of you guys been able to get all the oil out? Every time I drain or pump it all out and refill with the required amount of oil its always too much.

If I get 4 quarts out, I put 4 quarts in. Pretty simple.

Something to consider, just because the engine is up to temp doesn't mean that the oil is up to temp. The last car that I had that had an oil temp guage (aluminum LS1 chevy), would get the engine up to 200 in about 5 minutes, but the oil would only be around 120. It would usually take 20 minutes on the highway for the oil to get to the 200 degree range. Many people just start up the boat on a hose, let it idle until the engine temp shows it is up to temp (around 143 - 160), shut it off and try to drain the oil. Most likely the oil is only up to around 90 on a warm day and maybe only around 50-60 on a cold day. I prefer to drain right after I pull it out from skiing. My oil usually drains out in a couple of minutes at that time with hot oil. On the newer Nautiques with remote oil filters, check it out by (carefully) feeling the temp of the oil filter or oil line fittings after thinking you have it warmed up on a hose.

I try to do my oil removal immediately after running the boat in use, not just idling in the driveway. I have a small hand pump I take to the ramp with me on that day, and right after pulling the boat out of the water, I suck as much oil out as I can. I put the plug back on the hose. Then I take the boat home, and put the oil drain hose through the bilge drain hole, into a container, and then let it drain overnight.
The next morning, I change the filter, putting it on at tight as I can get it with my left hand only, and finish the oil change.
Letting the oil drain overnight you get more of the old oil out and the oil stays cleaner longer.

I run the boat in the lake to get the oil hot hot and check and note the level.

I save a 5 qt jug with sight gauge left over from an auto oil change and drain HOT oil into it OVERNIGHT. Usually there is only about 4 and 1/4 quarts with the engine level slightly under full. (I also change the filter while the engine is hot.) I let that drain and prime and install the new filter. By this time, about 3 quarts have drained and it is now at just more than a drip.

Then the next day (if I was happy with the level during the warm up), I put into the engine whatever drained out....usually about 4.25...never more than 4.5 quarts.

5 quarts will over fill the engine....even if you don't prime the filter. I know from the first oil change....had to drain some out.

A quick note, My boat has the GT-40 Ford motor in it, the filter is sideways on the block. I have found that by letting it sit overnight, a lot less oil runs out of the filter, into the bilge. Fewer oily rags to dispose of that way.
Remote filter mounted GM engines, it makes no difference when you change the oil filter, in the oil change process, as long as the filter is changed sometime. You can put a large plastic bag around the filter before you remove it, to catch any spilled oil.
