Looks like Paul at Mid Ohio may have the problem solved. My check engine light was flickering from time to time - seemed like it was at idle speeds on hot days so I assumed this was temp related. Previous owner said this happened a lot but he never had a problem. It would turn off when I got up to speed, and I threw on a new impeller so I figured no big deal, probably just a goof up with the light. Turns out the oil pressure switch was starting to go out. This accounts for the occasional light and the loss of power. When the Pro Tec system thought I lost oil pressure it would send the engine into the limp mode for a few seconds thanks to the bum switch. Other times, nothing at all. Paul is putting on a new switch and we'll see how it behaves. Hopefully that does it! Thanks everyone for your input. Guess this is a good "welcome to boat ownership" for me.
