2000 SAN issue

I'm looking at buying my buddies 2000 SAN. At the end of last summer the check engine light would come on and whenver you would accelerate it would get going fo a minute then it would slow down then speed up then slow down then speed up constantly if you went over about 15 mph. The perfect pass was not working on it (not sure if that could cause this issue). The motor I believe is the GT-40. It's currently at the CC dealership now being looked at. What do you all think this could be. Also, once he gets it back if I take it out for the day and everything appears to be working fine on it should that be a long enough testing period before buying it?

if he's your buddy he should go riding with you 2 or 3 times before you finalize the deal, or if he's a stickler give him 500$ down and take it for a week or two
