SAN = Super Air Nautique. It is a V-drive version of your boat.
so once you get past '02 ish (once they began numbering them), what makes one an Air and one a Super? I'm assuming Air means it has a tower, what makes them Super?
Good luck on your boat. Looks like a steal for $5K, but a lot of elbow grease will be needed.
Basically, in '98 you had the Air Nautique, the Super Air Nautique, and the Super Sport. Here are the differences:
Air Nautique: direct drive (engine in middle) open bow boat with tower.
Super Sport: V-drive (engine in back) open bow boat without tower.
Super Air Nautique: V-drive (engine in back) open bow boat with tower and ballast tanks.
To make things more complicated, they all share the same hull. Also, the Super Sport could be ordered from the factory to be configured exactly like the Super Air Nautique (like mine!). Not sure the reasoning behind this tactic, but may have something to do with graphics (or lack thereof).
Hope that helps.
Thanks, but my question more focused on post '02 boats. Some say Air and some say Super. Are 210's, 220's, and 230's automatically Super or is there an option package to make them that? Can my 211 be Super? etc...
Here is how to check the fuel pumps: http://planetnautique.com/index.php?...=109410#109410
The fuel pressure should be 39 PSI, plus or minus 3. there should also be several specifications on the top of your engine, on a decal.
HW, I think there was a pretty substantial gap between what the marketing guys were saying in late 97, versus reality. My friend with the twin to my boat ordered a 98 Air in late 97 based upon that statement and having driven the SS. He was told that there would be nearly no difference between the wakes of the two boats. He sold that boat and ordered a 99SAN before he had 100 hours on it. The wakes produced are vastly different. Much more so than you would expect between different engine placement, considering all the ballast placement.
That said, getting a boat like that for $5k is fantastic and a deal you could not pass up.

I always thought that the "air" was the same hull as the SS/SAN but in those pics the transom in more vertical than the SS. I know they changed the design of the transom on the SS/SAN in something like 2001 so I don't think thats the issue here. Can someone confirm that the hull of the Air is different that the SS/SAN in 98, or why this one has a vertical transom as opposed to a slanted transom?
if con is the opposite of pro, is congress the opposite of progress???
In 1995 both the Sport. and the Super Sport had the same basic hull. They had what I would call the "european" styled sloping back deck. The Super Airs retained this aft deck shape longer than the Sport boats did. I believe the bottom of the hull remained the same.
Using the same hull shape with a direct drive, and a V-drive boat, they will have greatly different wake shape and sizes at wakeboarding speeds.
There is a difference between a late 1990's Ski Nautique, and the Ski Nautique Open Bow at slower speeds, with the wake shape.
Hey not to be too obvious, but did you push the ignition button on the dash. In addition to turning the key, on that boat, the ignition button must be pushed in. It's sort of a master power button to the boat. If so, you would not be the first person who didn't know. Needs some cleaning up, but for 5K, that's a great deal. BKH
I don't think I would of know that but I have a friend with a 1999 sport nautique and our boats are almost identicle. So he has been helping me out some..

I have a '98 Ski nautique (GT-40) and had a fuel pump issue last season that I tracked back to the in-line fuse at the battery. Check that also.
Ok thanks, I just opened that fuse and things look a little corroded and saw a little peice of the contact fall out. I will break out my voltmeter and see if power is getting through. I have been cleaning the boat so that I can eventually work on the motor.(very dirty)
Thanks everyone for your insite. I had to jump on this deal fast. This boat was cheaper that my 1993 american skier advance ss that I sold about 2 years ago(loved that boad and converted me to inboards). So how is the wake on this 98 air nautique? Never riden behind a real wakeboard boat. I am very excited and to have a bigger boat is going to be very nice(our fourth boy is due in a couple weeks).

Also Check the simple things Is the boat in Neutral is the safety leash connected. If the boat turns over these are not the problem. I would check the 3 large red breakers on the back of the engine first then all the breakers in on the breaker box. Then the inline fuse to the battery. Then check to see if you are getting voltage to the fuel pump. Good luck

Air Nautique - tower, ballast graphics on a Sport Nautique
(some exceptions because they made an air version of the 196, and an air
version of the 176).
Super Air Nautique - tower, ballast, graphics on Super Sport Nautique.
When the 220 came out they tried to call that the Super Air Nautique, and that
wasn't well accepted, so they put the name back on the 210.
Super derived from the Super Sport Nautique hull, that's all.
Also, the Air Nautique never had the same hull as the Super Air/Super Sport.
The Air Nautique was introduced in 98. That is the same year that CC went to the TSC hull on both the Sport and Air. In 99 CC introduced the Pro Air Nautique, which had the TWC hull. Both hulls are different than the Super Sport/Super Air hull.
The Super Sport/Super Air hull remained unchanged from 95 through 2006. All changed were to the top cap, interior, etc. No change to the running surface.
