Solder pellets work well too for large 4 gauge and larger wire. You can find the pellets online or at your local welding supply. Basically, you get the wire stripped and ready. Put the ring lug in a vise and drop the pellet in and heat with a torch. The pellet will liquify and then you just stick the wire in and hold. It makes a strong connection. I follow this up with a light crimp and then heat shrink with adhesive liner.

The electrical engineers at my friends plant do it this way and it is a strong seal. I can put the lug in my vise grip and pull the wire and can't seperate the connection.

If you could crimp while the solder is still liquid that would be best. I gotta think you're cracking it, or atleast making the electrical connection worse by crimping after a solder.

i bought a west marine heavy crimper. havn't used it yet, but im gonna crimp then solder the connection w/ my buddy's blow torch. it's funny b/c he's a chef and uses it for creme brulee. FYI-all this is for a friends boat. i gave him a brand new kicker zx350.2, and bought all new tsunami wire/blocks and terminals. maybe i'll get some karma points.

im slightly confused. should i use the terminal or lug side? i'm using it for some 4 awg ring terminals to go to the battery. it's the west marine crimper. and am i supposed to use the 4/0 or 4?

seems like a nice tool for stereo installs.

You guys are funny. Sooo critical about this kind of stuff. I work in the solar power industry, our DC connections are subjected to higher or lower voltage, higher or lower current, but in the end there is a much higher liklihood of something really bad happening if our connection fails than anything we do in our boat. We usually crimp, we sometimes use setscrew connectors, we sometimes solder, we rarely go to the extremes that some of you describe. Use good wire and practice whatever method you decide until it looks good and feel solid, you should be pretty close.
