Depends on shaft size. On my older MC with a 1" shaft, the rope size is 1/4". On the 1.125" shaft, I believe it's 3/16". I considered the gortex option when I replaced mine. My dealer had the flax packing for $.40. That stuff lasts a good while and I don't mind the drip.

I beleive the steering box is 1/4 and the shaft is 3/16 I use the teflon impregnated Flax but the Gore is also good. There is a good guide on Correctcraftfan.com if you search packing.

Measure the old packing before you order the new stuff- thats the only way to guarantee you get the right sizes for both. CC seemed to be relatively inconsistent. My '90 took 3/16" in both driveshaft and rudder- but its anyones guess as to whether yours is 3/16" or 1/4".

Could be both also. Tim is right, measure it, it is really easy to do. You can also verify that what is in there is correct by using a drill bit the appropriate size to check the width of the span in the nut. Our Mustang had the wrong packing in the rudder port.
