Fire extinguisher - 211

I have been boating for decades (with other brands of boats) so I am embarrassed to ask this question....

I just purchased a used 2008 SV-211 and I cannot find the fire extinguisher, which is required by state law. The manual makes no mention of it except that it is required.

Can someone help me locate it? I see from a Google search that some models of this boat may have an automatic fire extinguisher system. How can tell if I have this system?

Fire extinguishers are mounted by the dealers when they are sold. Chances are yours was removed prior to your purchase. If you purchased from a dealer contact them and I am sure they will provide one at no charge, otherwise you can pick one up almost anywhere and mount it yourself. Make sure it is an ABC and Coast Guard approved (most are).

Halon Fire extinguisher is the best.

If you have to buy one, save your money and get a Halon one. You want the old style that is bad for the Ozone. Hopefully you will never have to use it. The halon is the best because it will not ruin your electical and motor if you have to use it. If you use the standard type, you will spend hours and a lot of money replacing parts. Spend a little now and save a lot latter.

I thought Halon was banned years ago? I agree they are the best they work by replacing oxygen so the fire cant breath if you inhale it you cant breath either. The ABC type is basically baking soda I cant see how it can damage parts that are sealed to water? It does make a mess like dumping powder all over.

I wouldn't eat the stuff but it is not considered harmful. It is a skin and eye irritant. Use does require a fair amount of cleanup as it sticks to everything.
Do you mean HALON?
HALON production is banned as it is hazardous to the ozone layer but it still can be purchased (recycled). Halon works by replacing oxygen in the area with a non-combustion supporting gas (HALON). Use in a closed environment does present a significant health risk as you can suffocate. Personally I would not use a Halon extinguisher in a boat as sufficient wind could disburse the gas. Face it, if your boat is on fire the least of your worries is going to be cleaning up the fire extinguisher residue.

I do not think Halon is dangerous in an outdoor environment. I believe Halon was banned due to what stated above that it displaces oxygen to snuff the fire. In a closed room, that is bad if a person was in the room. Halon was used primarily in computer server rooms to keep water off the equipment. Problem occurred when the systems inadvertantly discharged while someone was in the room, or if a small fire broke out while someone was in the room and the person passed out due to the Halon before they could escape the room.

Outside, it would seem almost impossible to displace enough oxygen to cause a problem. But, would work by displacign oxygen in the area the extinguisher was aimed.

Agree, can't see it being a suffocation problem outside. My concern in an outdoor environment would be a if Halon would be sufficient if there was a possibility of re-ignition.

With 40 gals of gas on board IMO the best fire extinguisher is a good exit plan.
