    Warm start issue 2001 GT40

    Hey Guys, took the boat out for the first time this weekend and had a blast. She fired up right when we dropped her into the water.

    After getting used to the boat we shut off the motor to drop a rider into the water and had an issue getting the boat to start again while it was warm. Motor turns over fine and actually runs for about a second before stalling out. We tried to put the throttle in neutral to give it a bit more gas and was able to get this method to work 1/10 times.

    Idle is right around 650 in neutral. If sitting for 5-10 minutes then the motor will fire up with no issues.

    Any things to check? I have a feeling it might be something to do with the timing when the motor is hot.

    and another interesting note, the only way to get it running was kind of a neutral drop. Put in neutral, start and give it some gas, and quickly shift back and engage gear. Prop would spin and you could just put back in neutral and it would idle fine and run great all day. So it was just in the initial kick over only. When the boat sat and cooled down it would start right up, and only experienced this when engine had been running for a bit and shut off briefly.

      I've had similar issues with my boat ('96 SN with GT40). If it's been sitting for half an hour or so, it'll start and run for a couple minutes, then sputter and die. I haven't found the cause yet, but my working theory is vapor lock. (1) I think if it was electrical it wouldn't start at all. (2) I know PCM says the fuel pump setup eliminates vapor lock; however, unlike automotive engines, the fuel line is not pressurized from the tank. (3) During operation it doesn't have a problem because fuel is circulating through the lines. (4) I think it starts and runs on the fuel in the FCU, then dies when that's exhausted and no more fuel is coming from the tank.

      If I can solve the riddle this summer, I'll post results here!

        Anyone figure this out yet. Same thing appears to be happening to my 1996 SSN. I replaced the high pressure pump and the impeller last season. Gauge now read the temp at about 140*. I'm thinking that its not reading the temp right and that I might be heating up and gong into Limp Home mode. Thoughts?

          I have been finding more problems coming from the E10 fuels we are getting now because some times it has more than 10% alcohol in the fuel. If it has more than 10% it vapor locks easier than regular gasoline. Also higher octane can percolate easier and vapor lock aslo.

            Swapped in 2 new fuel pump relays and a 4 hour session with about 20+ warm starts with no issues!

            $16 fix.
