    Boat cover or not?

I've been leaving my boat docked up at the lake all summer the past few summers. I always put my cover on so nothing will get stolen, and to avoid too much water in the boat. Is it healthier for the upholstery and teak backboard (AKA - will it help keep mold away) if I do away with the cover and let the boat get some sun and air. Also, would anyone recommend taking the backboard off everytime I leave the lake so that it stays healthy. Thanks.

    RE: Boat cover or not?

everyone i know has always covered it floating in the water, on the trailer, or on the lift. it's up to you, but i'd cover it. try to wipe it down before hand though.

Ok. I'll wipe it down and keep damp rid in there. Is there anything else I can do to keep mold from growing?

aside from airing it out and wiping it down no. if you are really worried about it i would take it out of the water if you dont use it every day or two. i have personally left my old mc in the water cover on in central florida summer for at least a week and no mold at all and i didn't air it out, but be careful

K, thanks. I use it several times a week, usually 5 or 6. So I will just leave it, and take the backboard out every few weeks to weather it. Appreciate the advice.

The old owner of my boat used to do that in his garage. It's a public dock with no plugs within 200 yards, would be nice though.

i saw a solar powered fan at west marine that you make a small incision into the cover and the sun powers it. i'm not sure id do it, but it seems like a great idea.

Mildew can be prevented by regularly cleaning the interior. I've had great luck with a GOOF OFF product called MILDEX, seems to clean well and even removes mildew that has started. I would always cover if you're storing outside. Keeps fading to a minimum, and keeps out critter such as birds that can do extensive damage.
