    Stalling in Gear

    I have a 2000 Ski Nautique. The boat has been brought back from the boat boneyards, and has came a long way.

    Only problems im having with the engine is that it only tries to die whenever I first put in in foward or reverse. If I give it gas whenever I put it in gear, I can keep it alive, but still pretty annoying.
    Also, after running for a while, it idles in neutral just fine, but ONLY after running for a bit.

    Any advice would help!

          I do not believe this is a stock setup. I was under the impression all Ford engines in 2000 were multiport injected GT-40 engines.
          Having said that, you should be able to set up the carb to run OK, but you will have to find the right combination of settings for the carb, and do a basic tune up, like you used to do on older boats.

            I know Correct Craft offered carbed engines as a low cost option from 2000 to 2002. but it sounds a though he needs to check the adjustment on the idle mixture and the idle speed.

              I believe the carb option was for a GM Engine.

                No I prepped a couple of carbed ford engines in 2000 with the keypad dash.

                  ok so it sounds like a carb idle mix issue??? i wasn't sure if it was a vaccum leak, or clogged jet or what. The thing is that it idles in neutral fine. top end runs fine as well.

                  i am not 100% if it is a gm or ford. Just was told. Specifics are 1999 Ski Nautique 196. Its a PCM engine, and holley carb. Im guess it was a lesser price option because it doesnt have power steering, shower or cruise. any more help would be great!

                  I am going to take it out and mess with idle in gear and see what i can come up with. Open to any ideas

                      I would pull the carb and rebuild it. It is a 4160 Holly and the kit can be purchased for it about anywhere, including NAPA. Only thing special about the marine 4160(as far as the rebuild kit goes) it to make sure you get the non adjustable fuel needle seats. Get the kit and a couple of cans of carb or brake cleaner and have at it. Replace the power valve(included in the kit). All it takes is some basic hand tools, 5/16 socket, 1" open end, 5/8th's open end and a pair of needle nose pliars.

                      Just did this on my 99 and it makes a world of difference. If you are not comfortable doing this, any competant mechanic should be able to. Took me maybe an hour.
