I have a 2000 SAN with the GT 40 engine in it. I"ve put about 20 hours on it since I got it (used with about 280 hrs) with out any trouble at all. Today when I cranked it up it was making a whining noise for about a minute then went away. Then later when I cranked it again same noise so I turned if off and cranked it again and same noise. Basically I only hear this noise when I turn the boat on for a minute and from what I can tell when I have the engine hatch up it appears that it is coming from the alternator belt or other belt below the alternator. I know the guy before me had a couple of them break on him so the belt is new. Any ideas?

RE: Whining noise
are all the pulleys in alignment? Is there a lot of black dust below or around the belt?
I have only had one belt go on me and it was in a 92BFN, and it happened in like 2004. I think it was the original, and around 650 hours.the WakeSlayer

RE: Whining noise
If the PO had a couple break on him that makes me think something's out of whack. When you retension those there's a possibility that it's not lined up correctly? Sometimes if they're not lined up right then one side of the pulley will chew on the belts, so that might be something to check. Seems to me like belts are NOT something you should need to replace every 100 hours. Definately check for lots of black dust/soot, whatever you want to call it. that would be a good indicator.Travis Fling

RE: Whining noise
I don't recall any black dust I will check again though. Should I be looking at something specific for the alignment or just eye ball it?

RE: Whining noise
Bryan,
Use a straight edge across the face of the sheaves (pulleys). If the alignment is good then the straight edge should touch the 4 sides of the two sheaves you're checking. However, I have a feeling that that isn't the problem.

RE: Whining noise
You think that's just an item that wears out once a season? I'm probably wrong as I'm not a guru on this type of stuff, but I know I don't replace mine that often. I have heard a whining sound before and replaced the belts and it solved it quick, but just seemed odd that it was that often, you know?Travis Fling
