I could be way off but wouldn't a normal 5.8L Ford V-8 starter work?

Marine starters are shielded to keep then from igniting any gas fumes present.
There is a possibility that trucks and boats would have different dimensions on the flex plate, or flywheel, or it may not, and a "normal" Ford 351 starter will bolt up.

i've been told that a marine starter is best because it is designed for less chance of a spark in the bilge area that might have fumes built up in it, thus reducing the chances for a weekend-killing explosion.
