    freeze plug help

I winterized my boat for the first time and I found that the plugs were all striped pretty bad. Now it is time to put the plugs back in and I can run a tap through the block plugs pretty easy but the plugs from the manifold are in pretty bad shape and may need to be taped a bigger size. Has anyone done this or have any tips. I did not have any leaks in the system last year but I figured that this is the time to fix it.

    Thanks, Nick

    RE: freeze plug help

You mean the "drain" plugs. Your thread title threw me off for a minute. Finding a larger plug for the exhaust manifolds might not be so easier or the next size is going to be a large difference. If it were me, I would purchase the petcock drain valves/fitting from Skidim and before installing, go ahead and tap the drain hole (to get it clean) and then glue the adapter bushing (that comes with the petcock kits) into the manifold with epoxy. With the petcocks, yoiu never would have to remove the reducing bushing again and can easily change out the petcock if necessary. Just a thought.

Does any one know the drain plug tap sizes? for the block and the manifold.

I think it is 3/4" NPT, but not sure.

Be careful chasing the threads on an NPT connection. NPT threads are tapered and you can oversise the hole if you don't pay attention to the depth.

Block is 1/4" NPT, Manifolds are 3/4" NPT
This is a very common problem, the mistake some make is removing the drain plugs and leaving them out all winter. This will cause rust in the threads and over time erodes away causing the threads to become over sized. After draining a block it wise to replace all the plugs and pour a 50/50 mix of antifreeze in. This keeps gaskest from dryng out and with the plugs in places no rust will form in the threads.

So true, and for good measure it is wise to coat the threads of the plugs with anti-sieze.

Fortunately, Nick's main problem is with the exhaust manifolds that are relatively easy to replace if a total lose.
