sounds like it is running rich (not getting enough air-like running with the choke on)
sort out the air filter/spark arrester and you may have to clean the plugs
Spark Arrestor has been cleaned. Plugs have been replaced. New high pressure pump installed. I have pretty much settled on either bad gas or clogged injectors. I just don't understand why it takes a while for the engine to start running poorly.
Anyone know if my motor has a TFI Module on it? I have heard of Ford motors having exactly my symptoms with a bad TFI Module. Grasping at straws here...
I would check fuel pressure! I had almost the same symtoms on my 97 ssn and the problem turned out to be a fitting on top of the gas tank that the fuel supply line connects to. It has a fine mesh screen in it and it was about 75% clogged with debris. Mine would also run awhile before it backfired and cut out. Sometimes half a day. I think the longer it ran the more gunk would clog the screen, then after it sat a bit the debris would settle and it would get just enough fuel to run ok.
On a side note. I was cruising this evening when I hit a moderate wave and my navigation breaker tripped. Had to throttle back to the dock before it got dark. Cut my Friday evening short for sure! It seems something always needs "fixin" on an older high hour boat. (I want a new 230 SOOO BADDD!)
Puy a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail to check the fuel pressure when it is happening. If teh fuel pressure is dropping off then do as ZigZag55k said ande trace your problem thru the fuel system.
OK, update time. I just tore the whole system apart. Couldn't find the "mesh screen" on the fuel supply line on the fuel tank. Replaced the low pressure line to the low pressure pump. Had a brand new low pressure pump sitting in the house so I replaced the LP pump. Figured that I would stop there and test it before moving on. Also plugged the heater lines off at the block, pulled the thermostat and boiled it to test and clean it. Popped it back in.
Fired her up on the "fake a lake" and ran her for 20 minutes. Temp came up to 160 and stayed there. Motor ran like a top. Hooked the truck up and ran her down to the lake. Fired her up in the water and ran her through the full RPM range for about an hour. Purrs like a well greased ***** cat Problem fixed....as far as I can tell. Will load her up with a thousand pounds of weight tomorrow morning and spend the day on the lake. See how it goes.
Thanks to everyone for your input. It really is helpful to have all of your thoughts and advice! You rock!
