tips on cleaning flame arrestor needed

I'm just getting round to de-winterizing the boat, about a month later than normal, probably due to having our first baby in the house!!

I replaced the v belts last year and refinished the pulleys as they were corroded a little as the pulleys were eating the belts. Anyway there's lots of dirt (actually pulley dust) in the flame arrestor and I'm thinking of ways to clean it. I'm thinking some suitable detergant and /or carb cleaner and an air line. Any other options??

Use the carb cleaner in a spray bottle. Spray from the inside out away from all things painted and breathing. Let it dry completely before reinstalling (some compressed air can facilitate this). I do this at the end of every season.

        Wear gloves, and eye protection.
        Remove it from the engine.
I have used mineral spirits (paint thinner) or gasoline. No smoking while doing this.
Blow from the inside out with compressed air, after the cleaning, to remove solvents.

Laquer thinner is my favorite. Same method as above.
