Hope someone can help me with this problem with my 99SAN with GT 40 HO engine which has over 800 hours on it.
Normally there is no problem planing off and running with full ballast of 750 lbs on each side of the engine in the rear and 900 lbs in the ski locker in front when we are wakeboarding.
Last time out it took a long time to plane and while running somewhat smooth it didn’t appear I had full power. I checked the distributor cap and rotor(both replaced last July) and both have some corrosion which I sanded off. The inside of the distributor itself was fairly corroded as the boat was in saltwater prior to me purchasing it about 5 years ago but now it’s running in fresh water in Florida.
I pulled the plugs on the passenger side and I pulled the plug pictured below from the second cylinder from the back of the boat. The other plugs on that side were in normal condition with little wear from when they were replaced with the plug wires last summer with Autolite 764 plugs. Probably only 30-40 hours use since then.
This is the same cylinder I had a problem with last summer. At that time there was also a loss of power so the heads were taken off and found to be cracked and the exhaust manifolds were replaced as they were leaking. Because they were leaking it was thought that that was the problem with water getting into that cylinder. The piston in that cylinder had some damage but the mechanic at the time did not think it was enough to be replaced. The heads were replaced with GT 40P heads.
Last year PCM said it could be caused by water getting into the engine from the exhaust
pipe and the exhaust flap was replaced as well.
What’s the problem with this cylinder? Is it a timing or detonation issue or worse?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
