I have a 1997 196 with a GT-40. Last year when I replaced the impeller I stripped the treads out on one of the bolt holes in the housing. I just put a bolt with a nut on the back to fix it then. This year I stipped the threads out of the top bolt hole where it attaches to the bracket on the motor. Can't put a nut and bolt through this one, there is not enough room. I don't feel like I am tightening them too much. What is the housing made of. Seems like maybe brass. Has anyone else had this problem??

RE: Stripped threads on Sherwood
Take it easy with the wrenches. You are attaching a water pump to a motor. You are not building bridges.
Check out site sponsors for a new water pump.
Another option is to take the water pump to a good auto machine shop, and have them put a thread insert (Helicoil) in the stripped holes.

RE: Stripped threads on Sherwood
I think I cross threaded one of my bolt holes last year on the housing. It still went in and held tight. I was thinking I would take a look at it in a couple of weeks when I replace the impeller. Could you use a tap and die set and bigger size bolt?Previous:
