    Skidim Retro ProTec Pack

    lo fellas....more questions

Can anyone recommned the kit below. My 1994 Ski Nautique 196 (Ford PCM Motor) coil pack has died, I gather they are no longer made so looks like its going to have to be one of these retro kits.

Are they any good ??? Same question re the company too really,im in the UK .So its a bit of a gamble for me.A 50% saving on what the kits are over here.Ive added the link below. As ever thank you for any info.

    RE: Skidim Retro ProTec Pack

Ski Dim sells quality parts and provides great customer support. I used that same kit on a 93' I owned several years ago. IMO it ran better with that kit then EVER before, since new, with the ProTech. Should work fine for you.

I installed that kit on my '91 2 years ago after the motor blew up. It's pretty straight forward and a way better setup than ProTec. If I recall correctly it doesn't use as many sensors on the block as ProTec did. So, you can pull those and put in a plug, or I think i just left them disconnected.

ProTec is a good system that works well. The problem is that is quickly became obsolete when PCM moved to the GT-40 MPI engine and thus had no more need for ProTec and stopped supporting it. PCM does still have replacement parts for the ProTec system, but will only sell to TBI engine owners as the TBI systems relies totally on the Protec...they are well married together. I sold my '93 (with '95 TBI engine) SN last month and the new owner proptly had a ProTec coil pack failure. Since he had the TBI engine he was able to get the failed coil pack replaced with new. The new owner called to say all was well.

My point is that with many others having ditched the ProTec, I bet you could locate someone that still has a good coil pack that they are willing to sell (or any other ProTec part you may need). What ProTec gives you is detonation protection, limp home, better spark control and thus fuel economy.

            David,

Thought I had read something regarding the "check engine" light no longer operates with the Retro-Kit? Maybe it was the Limp Mode as you mentioned, any thoughts?

The ProTec system in my boat failed to give me detonation detection and as a result my number 3 piston turned into shrapnel.
