Stuffing Box for 98 Super Sport - Questions

    1. Are the threads LEFT or RIGHT handed on the stuffing box?
    2. Should the stuffing box and the locking nut be wired, some older/other boats apparently have this.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks

RE: Stuffing Box for 98 Super Sport - Questions

I have a 98 super sport like yourself, the nut is a left handed thread and its not wired, its not required.

Thanks for your replay. I had what I considered excess drops, made the adjustments and am pleased with the result. I am a bit concern that the stuffing box was not wired. It appears the holes are there to permit the large nut to be tied to the "flange".

Would anything be harmed if this were to be wired?

I don't recall seeing a wire there in the past and your reply confirms that. Oh well, I'll keep my eyes on the blige for a while.

The stuffing box I am discussing here is on the prop shaft. The stuffing box, and its waxed contents, prevents the boat from sinking as the shaft extends thru the hull into the water. In other words, keeps the water from getting into the boat.

You can check the owner's manual for a better description than I can provide.

If you have holes for wires it won't hurt to wire it. The Jam nut should be sufficient. Just remember you need a few drips per minute. If you tighten it until there are no drips it isn't being lubricated and you could score the shaft.
