    '00 SANTE Electrical Problem

Just checking to see if any of you have had this same/similar problem. The boat is currently at the Nautique dealer here in Dallas but they can't seem to figure out the problem either.

A few weeks ago I pulled my alternator off of my GT-40 to have it tested...it seemed that my batteries weren't staying charged properly while out on the water and I assumed it was probably the alternator. I had the alternator rebuilt and bearings changed out. The alternator shop offered to reinstall the alternator so I let them. I took the boat out for Memorial Day Weekend, dropped it in the water, pushed the start button, and a nice cloud of smoke came out from under the engine compartment. I took a quick smell of the smoke and could tell it was electrical. I looked more and the guys at the alternator shop had hooked the green wire up to the static post instead of hooking it to the correct feed. By hooking it up wrong, it completely melted the insulation off the wire.

So, I called Nautique and had them order me the GT-40 PCM Wiring Harness for the alternator. I installed it correctly by just replacing wires as I went along. After the installation, the 60 amp fuse on the front of the engine continues to blow every time the fuel pump comes on prior to starting the boat. I yanked the alternator out and replaced it with a brand new one to test and it still blows. If I pull the Orangy Red Wire off of the alternator, the boat fires up fine. Other than this, I've had no problems with the motor.

Any ideas on where to start looking? Something is overloading the 60 amp circuit but I can't seem to find the problem. Apparently the dealership is having the same problems.

    Appreciate the help.

    RE:

I think that you have a grounded section of the orange wire. I am sure that you can bypass the orange wire and take a wire straight to the battery from the alternator. If it starts and chargres then you will have your answer.

I upgraded to the 100 Amp alternator kit from PCM and the new harness did just what I described but with much larger wire to handle the power.

Thank's for your help bchesley. I'm dropping by the dealership this afternoon and will run that past them.

On a side note, are you happy you upgraded to the 100 Amp alternator? I still have the orginal but I'm running 3 Blue Top Batteries(original owner felt he needed 3). I'm wondering if that small alternator is just having a problem charging all 3 of those while powering the EFI, lights, and my stereo. That may have been my original charging problem.

I am really happy with it. I was really pushing mine before I upgraded. I am running around 1600 watts and play it pretty hard. Now that I have the 100 amp the volt meter is steady while playing it at full volume.

How difficult is the 100 amp install and about how much are the parts do you remember? I only have a pair of Pro 80's two amps, 1 10" sub, but I have always had problems with the blue tops. I have two batteries and the one running the stereo seems to go bad after a year.

You can order it from Skidim.com or whitelake marine for around $300. It might be cheaper with our PN discount. It was super easy to install. You change out three wires and bolt up the new one. The only thing I got hung up on is changing the pulley out. If you have access to a impact wrench it will pop right off. I struggled with mine a bit but got it off.

Upgraded to 100amp Alternator, but still got under 12v at dash gauges

I own a 2001 SAN. I upgraded to factory 100amp Alternator, but still got under 12v at dash gauges. My problems are:
              - The volt gauge & perfect pass show below 12volts.
              - The Main switch under the dash (the one that connects bilge pump as well) keeps disconecting from time to time when the boat is running. And I have to reset it, then the boat runs again, until it happens again...

Do I have to upgrade any wires to dash as well? Any other change I need to do, i.e. circuit breaker?
