    v drive issue

    hey guys,

i was hoping somebody may be able to offer a little help.

i have a 01 super sport (walter v drive). the other day the v drive light came on. i have known these v drive are notorious for leaking so i just assumed it was finally my time to replace the gasket. we i got back to the house and had full oil and no signs of leakage. i even placed a paper towel under the v drive for a couple days and that still showed no signs of leakage.

So i assumed it was the sensor. ordered and replaced. i also completely drained the v drive and removed the screen at the bottom to ensure it was clean while i was waiting on the sensor.

Next time out (this weekend), when first running the boat, the light goes off like normal (>1200 rpm). i drive for a bit and stop. did not turn the boat off. the next time in gear, the light comes on and stays on. It will go off and on kindof randomly but will mostly stay on once it does come on. however, the light will always go off when putting the gear in reverse. this happened like this on sat and sunday and would happen just like above if we sat for a while, not just for the first time out for the day.

so, my question is, what am i not looking at. is there something in the v drive that creates the pressure or is the pressure created from putting the boat in gear. is there something in there that i need to take a look at. could this be a simple grounding/electrical issue?

sorry for the long post. thanks for any advice/help.

    RE: v drive issue

I was under the impression that the light was there for issues such as oil pressure (reason it goes off at above 1200rpm) and engine overheat.
Not necessarily for anything with regards to the v drive.

There are two lights, one is a general check engine for temp, oil pressure, etc, The second one is specifically for the trans.

The light that goes off above 1200 RPMs is for oil pressure in the v-drive. Thus it is always on when the boat is not in gear, regardless of RPM. Seeing as how you've already replaced the sensor, I would assume that this is some sort of electrical connection issue, maybe the wiring to the display unit in your dash?

thats sortof what i was thinking. i mean its got a clean filter, new oil, no leaks, and a new sensor. i am wondering if it is possible for the oil lines on the v drive to become clogged? i am going to check the connections from the sensor (i put on brand new ring terminals) to the dash. kindof weird. everything i have read indicates oil leak (which was a very common problem in these v drives), but thats just not the case here.

and gobig is spot on. the big red light is your engine light. lets you know something is not right, oil pressure, over heat, etc.....

the small light is V DRIVE oil pressure.

I had the same problem but mine was the leak. Sucks $400 dollar fix for a $30 part. However I would never trust myself with that job.

Disconnet the switch and test it with a meter while running, check it at idle and above 1200 rpm's. I believe it is normally closed and opens with pressure. Using a meter you can narrow your trouble down and confirm if its the switch or wiring.

I have the same issue, but after a hours use the light goes off, its been like that for a long time and has never caused any problems. Becuase I know the oil is good. I did see someone mention there is a filter on the Walters gearbox, is that correct??
